Considerations

Preparation & Timing

24 Hours Before Collection

• Freeze freezer brick.
• Eat your usual diet, but avoid overeating any single food or following an extreme diet.
• Drink no more than six 8-ounce glasses of fluid in the 24 hours before collection.

Night Before Collection

• Fast overnight and only drink water.

Morning of Collection

• Do not eat or drink anything other than water before collection.
• Collect urine and bloodspot immediately upon waking.

24 Hours After Collection

• Ensure urine tubes have been frozen and bloodspot card has dried for at least 24 hours before returning.

Before You Collect

1. Write your date of birth and the date of collection on the provided labels.
2. Place a completed label on the urine tubes and bloodspot card.

Collect Urine

1. If you wake up during the night within 6 hours of your first morning urination, collect that urine and refrigerate it. In the morning, add your first morning urine to the same cup.
2. Stir, then use the pipette to transfer urine from the cup to each of the 4 tubes until they're almost full.

   Some tubes contain substances. Avoid Contact with skin and eyes. For eye contact, flush with water thoroughly for 15 minutes. For skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If ingested, contact a poison control center immediately.

3. Close the tubes tightly and shake them.
4. Put the tubes into the biohazard bag and freeze for at least 2 hours. The freezer brick must be frozen at least 8 hours.

Collect Blood Spots

1. Wash your hands with warm water and dry them with a clean towel.
2. Hold your hand lower than your heart and massage your non-dominant hand's middle finger for 30 seconds to improve circulation. Firmly grasp the top knuckle for a few seconds then gently shake your fingers.
3. Clean the tip of your middle finger with the alcohol pad.
4. Remove the clear cap from the lancet and press against the side of your sterilized finger until you hear a click.
5. Wipe away the first blood drop with the gauze pad and gently massage your finger to form more drops.
6. Touch the tip of each blood drop to a circle on the collection card without smearing it or touching the card with your finger.
7. Fill all four circles fully with blood. Blood should saturate both sides of the card.
8. If you cannot get sufficient blood, repeat steps 2-7 with another finger.
9. Dry your finger and apply a bandage.
10. Allow the collection card to dry for at least 24 hours.
11. Once the card is dry, place it in the biohazard bag along with the silica absorbent pack.
