Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for lab testing?

The short answer: Yes!

Many people pay for Genova Connect testing with HSA or FSA funds and we accept major cards linked to those accounts. Always keep your receipt and check your plan’s rules for reimbursement.

Why Lab Testing Often Qualifies

The IRS defines qualified medical expenses as costs for diagnosis, treatment, mitigation, or prevention of disease, and it specifically lists laboratory fees as includible medical expenses. That’s why HSA/FSA plans commonly allow payment or reimbursement for lab work.

What you’ll need for reimbursement

  • Itemized receipt with test information and amount paid. Genova provides an insurance-ready receipt after completion; you can download it from your activation email or at gdx.net/activate.
  • Plan requirements such as a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) or documentation from your provider. These vary by plan administrator. The IRS confirms that expenses eligible under §213(d) are generally payable from HSAs/FSAs, but administrators set documentation rules.
Step-by-step
  1. Choose your test on Genova Connect and pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
  2. Use the collection pack that arrives to collect your sample and return it to the lab.
  3. When results are ready, download your itemized receipt and keep it with your records.
  4. If your plan requires it, submit your receipt (and LMN if asked) to your HSA/FSA portal.

Common questions

Do I need a doctor’s order for my HSA/FSA to reimburse a Genova Connect test?

Not typically. HSAs/FSAs pay for qualified medical expenses, which include laboratory fees for medical care. Some plan administrators may still require an LMN to document medical necessity. Check your plan’s rules.

Are all at-home tests covered?

Coverage depends on your plan. The federal employee FSA program, for example, lists “Lab (medical)” and “Laboratory fees” as eligible with a detailed receipt, which gives a good indication of how many plans view lab testing.

Is traditional insurance the same as HSA/FSA?

No. Genova Connect purchases can’t be billed to traditional insurance, but you can pay with HSA/FSA funds.

What if my plan denies reimbursement?

You can still use your HSA/FSA card at checkout, but if your plan later denies reimbursement, contact your administrator to understand what documentation is missing.

Smart tips to avoid hassles

  • Pay with the HSA/FSA card directly at checkout when possible.
  • Save everything: order confirmation, itemized receipt, and any provider notes.
  • If unsure, call your plan’s customer service and ask whether your selected test qualifies as a §213(d) diagnostic expense.
